MARGARET SNODDY (1756 - 1833)
MARGARET SNODDY was born Aug 18, 1756 in Rowan Co, NC, and died Oct 23, 1833 in Logansport, Cass Co, IN. She married JOSEPH "JOE" MCCORKLE Feb 28, 1775 in Rowan Co, NC, son of ALEXANDER MCCORKLE and NANCY/AGNES MONTGOMERY. He was born May 04, 1753 in Paxton Lancaster Co, PA, and died Jan 21, 1828 in Piqua, Miami Co, OH.
Notes for MARGARET SNODDY:
Margaret Snoddy McCorkle is buried at the Mt. Hope Cemetery, Logansport, Cass
County, Indiana.
The following is an exerpt from John Hale Stutesman's book on Samuel Snoddy (p 37-38): Margaret's daughter (Mary McCorkle Hars) made a record of the names and dates of birth of the children of Samuel and Elizabeth (Sloan) Snoddy, including her mother who, she reported, was "born August 18, 1756." Margaret's parents were probably living in Rowan County, NC at this time.
"She was raised on a frontier farm in what is now the southeast corner of Alexander County, North Carolina. At the time of her birth, the Cherokees were burning out the settlers on that frontier. A stockaded fort near her father's homestead was the center of white protection and resistance. The Indians were driven back into their mountains; the white farmers resumed their peaceful toil. The Snoddy farm on Elk Shoals Creek was swarmed by children, and Margaret was about the middle one.
On February 21, 1775, Andrew Mitchell, a neighbor, made his bond in Rowan County Court for his marriage to Margaret Snoddy. And on February 28, Joseph McCorkle also made bond there for his marriage to that same woman. The first bond was co-signed by Margaret's elder brother. A stormy scene lay behind those bonds.
One of her granddaughters, Harriet (Brandon) Judah, wrote a "memoranda" in 1882 in which she recounted those dramatic, romantic events:
Joseph McCorkle married Margaret Snoddy contrary to the wishes of her parents. The night before the day fixed for the marriage she made her exit from a bedroom window, and married our grandfather. There was no interruption in the wedding festivities; another sister filled Margaret's place." That substitute bride was Margaret's sister, Sarah.
Another granddaughter, Alice (Hars) Dodd, added: "Tradition has it that Joseph McCorkle and Margaret Snoddy married in defiance of paternal will, although the maternal blessing and conivance was not lacking.
In 1828, Margaret Snoddy McCorkle, after the death of her husband, Joseph, moved near her widowed daughter, Mary (McCorkle) Hars, in Logansport, Indiana."
Quotes from John Mantle Judah:
(1) "The well-known story of the elopement and marriage of my grandparents is that Joseph was one morning at work, roofing a house. His father came and said, 'Joe, that old fool Snoddy is going to marry his girl Margaret to so-and-so tomorrow. Maybe you'd better go and see about it.' Whereup, Joe hastily clambered down, put on his coat and galloped off several miles to the Snoddy place. That night after the stern old father was asleep, Margaret handed out her bridle and saddle through a window and herself followed. She never saw her parents again, for old Snoddy never forgave her, leaving her a shilling* in his will. The story goes on to say that a younger sister was willing to supply Margaret's place to the bereaved groom [Andrew Mitchell], so that a wedding took place nevertheless." *(Samuel's will actually left his daughter Margaret five shillings, the same amount he left his other six children.)
(2) "That old Snoddy was an old tyrant is evident enough, and probably our great-great-grandpa was right in calling him an old fool, but we cannot deny that we have some of his blood. In as much as he disinherited our great-grandmother and all of us, we may fairly disinherit him. However, it all happened a long time ago, and we may as well let bygones be bygones."

Notes for BENJAMIN LEAVELL:
Copied from Harbaugh's 1909 History of Miami County Ohio, Chapter 22
"As early as 1805 Benjamin Leavell, a millwright, came to Piqua and engaged in his business. It was the first milling done in this part of the country. The first manufacture of linseed oil, a business which has given Piqua a name everywhere, was engaged in by John McCorkle of that city in 1824. The McCorkle mill was run by water power, and the crusher was a large circular block of limestone. Notwithstanding Mr.McCorkle's industry his primitive machinery proved a serious drawback and there was but a limited demand for his output, owing no doubt to this handicaps an other parts of the county little flour mills sprang up and proved a great benefit to the inhabitants. As most of these were operated by water power they were to be found along streams. Their machinery was of the simplest description, built by the hands that had erected the pioneer cabins or guided the first emigrant teams over the mountains."

Ben was a merchant in early Piqua and the first millwright in the county; by 1808 his was one of seven long houses in Miami County on Water Street east of the canal. A "B. Level" laid out Defiance, the county seat of Defiance Co. OH, in 1822. He took out a license to marry Martha McCorkle in Dayton, Ohio. The McCorkles came to Miami Co. in 1806. He married MARTHA MCCORKLE July 14, 1807 in Miami County, Ohio, daughter of JOSEPH MCCORKLE and MARGARET SNODDY. Their marriage was one of the first in the county. She was born February 22, 1788 in Fayette County, Kentucky, and died March 13, 1868 in Miami County, Ohio.
Defiance, Ohio, was laid out in November of 1822 by Benjamin Leavell and Horatio G. Phillips. Ben became a resident and was its innkeeper; he also kept the first store for white settlers, located on the banks of the Maumee, at the foot of Jefferson Street. His home was the first frame building in the village, a 1 1/2 story built in December 1822 on the NW corner of Jefferson & Water St. It was opposite the fort grounds. He was elected commissioner in 1824. The court granted him license to vend merchandise at his home in Defiance for one year on 8 May 1824 for $10 fee. He resigned by October 1825, and returned with his family to Piqua, Ohio. --from HISTORY OF DEFIANCE COUNTY, OHIO, containing a history of the county; its townships, towns, etc.; military record; portraits of early settlers and prominent men; farm view; personal reminisences, etc. (1883) Chicago: Warner, Beers & Co.
Their marriage was celebrated as the first in the county. He was the first millwright in Miami County. By 1808, his was one of seven log houses in Miami County on Water Street, east of the canal. A "B. Level" laid out Defiance, the county seat of Defiance County, in 1822.
"Benjamin Leavell was a carpenter by trade, and did most of the building of the log cabins of the new town. He was born July 17, 1781, in Culpepper County, Virginia, and came to Piqua in 1805 where he built a cabin on what is now the south-west corner of Main and Water streets. In the fall of 1807, he married Martha McCorkle, whose father and family had located just below town in 1805. This is said to have been the first wedding in Miami County. He was the first treasurer of Washington Township, and also served as Quartermaster in the war of 1812. In 1825 he moved to Williams County, where in connection with H. G. Philips, of Dayton, established the town of Defiance. He was one of the Associate Judges of Williams County for several years, and also laid out the town of Napoleon. In 1831 he came back to Piqua and built a tavern on the east side of Main street, between Greene and North. After several years of this business he retired and built a fine residence on Wayne street afterward owned by Dr. W. S. Parker. Here he died in 1860, honored and loved by the citizens of the whole town."--THE FIRST CENTURY OF PIQUA, OHIO, page 16
"Leavell's Inn was on the east side of Main, about half way between Greene and North, and was built by Benj. Leavell in 1831."--THE FIRST CENTURY OF PIQUA, OHIO, page 220.

Dear Sir:
My sister, Mrs. Stutesman, asked me to copy any articles that might interest you among the fragmentary bits fround among Grandmother Hars' belongs (that) escaped the fire that caught most of her papers.
In an old stained notebook of hers I find a few notes in ink almost faded from sight concerning the Snoddy family. These notes have been made evidently on the occasion of Mrs. Hars' visit to relatives in Ohio, late in life.
Very truly yours,

An autobiographical note from John Hale Stutesman's book on Samuel Snoddy and
Elizabeth Sloan:
"I was born in Washington,
DC on December 16, 1920. My father was an officer of the U.S. Army, so I was
raised on Army posts in Georgia, Kansas, and Massachusetts. I graduated from
Princeton University in 1942 with honors in History, and promptly went to war.
Four years later, a Captain of Artillery, decorated for bravery in the campaigns
in Italy, I was commissioned in the U.S. Foreign Service, the corps which staffs
the U.S. Embassies and Consulates abroad. After thirty years of that fascinating
but aarduous life, I retired to the pleasant peninsula of San Francisco."
