Page 174 - "Deed records show that William Lamb of Lawrence County, entered 160 acres which ran south of the present Matthews Avenue to the present Nettleton Avenue, and west from Culberhouse street to the line dividing the Love property where the Children's Playground is now located. Lamb acquired title to the land from the government sometime between 1825 and 1830, the record being lost in the fire of 1869. This land was conveyed from Lamb to Rufus Snoddy at an early date, and was the old homeplace of the Snoddy's for many years, Rufus having settled there in 1830, when the Indians were living in the woods around him. When the record was destroyed by fire, Captain M. A. Adair made affidavit, which is of record, that he was here in 1856, and knew that Snoddy had purchased the land from Lamb prior to that time. Rufus Snoddy died in the spring of 1858 or fall of 1857, according to the affidavit, and Fergus Snoddy secured deed for the property from his sisters, Mrs. John Nicholas and Mrs. Mary Holden in May 1859, after his father died. Hence, Fergus Snoddy, about the time Jonesboro was created, owned 480 acres of the finest property in what is now the present heart of Jonesboro."

Page 375 - "The second settlement in what is now Craighead County, was started when Rufus Snoddy settled in what in now West Jonesboro in 1830. His hunting partner, Daniel O'Guinn, arried in 1836 and settled a few miles north of Snoddy. The Snoddy family remained in this locality for many years, and 29 years after Rufus settled, his son Fergus donated fifteen acres for the town site of Jonesboro. The first sale of town lots for the town of Jonesboro took place September 5, 1859."

Page 382 - The First Families of Craighead: "Rufus Snoddy, a native of Tennessee, came to what is now Craighead County in 1830 and bought eighty acres of land between the present Matthews and Nettleton and Culberhouse and Floyd Street from a soldier of the War of 1812, who secured the land by bounty warrant. The Snoddy home stood at a point between Cherry and Nettleton and Culberhouse and Walnut Streets. At the time he settled there, Indians lived in the woods to the south and west of his farm, and he often hunted with them, being away for long intervals with hunting bands in the fall and winter months. Rufus died during the latter part of 1857 or early in 1858, leaving three children, his wife having died sometime prior to his death. Prior to coming into the county Rufus and his brother, Alanson ("Latt") Snoddy, had resided in what is now Poinsett County as early as 1823. "

Biographical and Historical Memoirs of Northeast Arkansas, compiled by Mrs. Leister Presley Searcy, Arkansas:

Page 312 - "Entrance into the territory composing Craighead County began about the year 1830, and among the first settlers was a Mr. Martin, who chose a location some five miles south of the present site of Jonesboro. He was probably the first permanent resident. Other very early settlers were Rufus SNODDY, Daniel O'Guinne, Yancey Broadaway and Joshua Gringer."

Page 385 - "Albert Franklin Taylor was the stepson of Alanson "Latt" Snoddy. His father, Abner Taylor, was a large slaveholder and planter. He spent four years in the forest on Maumelle, then returned to Jackson, TN, where he attended school four years. At the age of 21 he returned to Maumelle township. He raised at home all that he needed for his own maintenance and had livestock for sale which drove to Memphis. He served in the Confederate army. He met his future wife while she was visiting her uncle, Alanson Snoddy. They owned ten thousand acres of fine sandy loam land for many years in the Lunsford district and built a town whose citizenship loves and reveres the name of Taylor. He served in the Confederate army and at the close of the war headed the Ku Klux in restoring order in the country. He married Elizabeth Jane Snoddy, who also was born in Tennessee. Nicholas left the Indian Village of Chillicataw (Kennett) in a pirogue heavily laden with goods to traffic with the aborigines. After passing Oldtown (Lake City) he proceeded down river to trade with the Indians of Maumelle. When his boat landed at Deep Landing at the edge of the prairie, and while he was opening his goods to show to the redmen, his eye fell upon a beautiful white maiden, who shyly observed him from a distance. 8. FERGUS/FURGUSON5 SNODDY (RUFUS4, SAMUEL3, SAMUEL2, UNKNOWN1) was born 1827 in TN, and died Jul 15, 1887 in Craighead Co, AR. He married MARY JANE MATTIX Abt. 1848 in AR, daughter of EDWARD MATTIX and CHARITY ROBERTSON. She was born 1831 in Greene Co, AR, and died in Craighead Co, AR.

Notes for FERGUS/FURGUSON SNODDY:
"History of Craighead County, Arkansas":

Chapter 19, page 117: ..."Fergus Snoddy, who proposed giving fifteen acres to the County for said site, ... hence, it was through the generosity of Fergus Snoddy, son of the old pioneer Rufus Snoddy, that the county in its infancy was able to secure a town site as a free gift, and sufficient territory in the site was available for lot sale to secure funds with which to build the first court house."

Page 173 - "Fergus Snoddy, son of the pioneer Rufus Snoddy, had quite an acerage of land in and around what is now Jonesboro at the time the county was created. He had acquired most of it through the purchase of bounty warrants from soldiers who had servedin the war of 1812. In December, 1853, he secured eighty acres in this manner. The land secured at that time began at the present Monroe street and ran north to the present railroad tracks. The eastern and western boundaries were from Church street to the present Culberhouse street. In Deed Record 8, page 82, the conveyance to Snoddy is outlined as follows: A deed from President Franklin Pierce of the United States was granted to Snoddy under a proclamation setting forth the fact that due to an Act passed by Congress September 28, 1850, granting land to certain officers and soldiers who had been engaged in military service of the United States, Warrant No. 24,792 for this eighty acres was issued in favor of Robert Strother, corporal in Captain Neely's Regiment, Second Tennessee Mounted Volunteers, in the War of 1812. This was assigned by Strothers to Fergus Snoddy in consideration of a cash payment, and, this fact being acknowledged, the president grant the land to Snoddy.

In 1858, Snoddy secured the land by bounty warrant purchased from another soldier of the War of 1812. This last named eighty was involved in litigation about thirty years later. This second eighty ran from Monroe to Matthews street to the south, and from Church street west of Culberhouse. In July, 1859, Soddy secured from the State of Arkansas, under the Swamp Land Grant of 1850, title to the north half of se qr, 13-14-3. Both these parcels of land joined his previous acreage, running parallel with same from Matthews street to the present railroad tracks, and west from Culberhouse to the present Floyd street."

Page 174 - "Fergus Snoddy, about the time Jonesboro was created, owned 480 acres of the finest property in what is now the present heart of Jonesboro."

Page 342 - "In 1858, Elizabeth Lane conveyed to Fergus Snoddy land that she had received in patent (War of 1812 payment) on June 15, 1856. This transaction is detailed in Deed Record 8, page 133 of Jonesboro District: south half of the southwest quarter of Section 18-14-4, containing eighty acres. The property began at Matthews Avenue on the south and then proceeded north to Monroe Avenue; on the east it began at Church street and continued west to what is now Culberhouse street. The original fifteen acres in the town site as laid out by the Commissioners in the year 1859, was included, with the court house property, as well as hundreds of lots on which residences had been built by citizens of the town who had made purchase of land and erected homes. The above land was conveyed in consideration for a yoke of oxen. Snoddy had deed recorded at the court house, but in the year 1869 the court house was destroyed by fire. The original deed was in the home of Captain W. W. Nisbett, and a short time later the Nisbett home burned, hence all record of the transaction was destroyed.

Judge Carson had purchased quite a lot of property in the district embraced. In the September term, 1892, Carson brought suit to re-establish the dded from Elizabeth Lane to Fergus Snoddy, in order to quiet his title to two lots back of the old Methodist Church on the west side of Church street. Carson won his case in court and the conveyance was entered of record.

A short time after the case was heard, L. C. Bailey et. al., heirs of Elizabeth Lane, brought suit to set aside the order reinstating the deed of Lane to Snoddy, and the court ordered the previous order set aside.

Carson then filed a suit again to revive the old conveyance from Lane to Snoddy, in the name of C. N. Carson et. al., vs Heirs of Elizabeth Lane. In the meantime, the heirs of Elizabeth Lane who resided in this county, Poinsett County, Missouri and Texas, brought a counter suit in the name of "W. Higginbotham, et. al. Brookfield, Carson and all other citizens interested in the property set up the contention that the land was entered in 1852 for Elizabeth Lane, who sold it to Fergus Snoddy in 1858. That Elizabeth Lane died in the year 1863 without children. The heirs of the woman alleged that the deed, if one was given to Snoddy, was bogus, inasmuch as she was married and her husband did not join in the conveyance. Judge Brookfield, who in his younger days had been a sweetheart of Elizabeth Lane, testified that she was not married at the time the conveyance was made. D. H. and A. S. Thorn, who worked with the Lane woman in the field, and were associted with Joe Smith, the man she was said to have married in 1857 or 1858, testified that she was not married at the time of the conveyance. Uncle Solomon McDaniel was an important witness for the citizens. It was on his place that Smith made a crp the year he was supposed to have married the Lane woman. He testified Smith was still single and visiting "Lizzie" Lane. The affidavait of M. A. Adair follows:

I am a resident of Craighead County, Arkansas and I have lived here since 1856, before Craighead County was organized. I was well acquainted with Fergus Snoddy during his lifetime, and know of my own knowledge that he made a donation of 15 acres of land in the sw qr., of Sec. 18, Twp. 14, North Range 4 east, for a town site for the town of Jonesboro, Arkansas.

After hearing the evidence and arguments, the jury held that Elizabeth Lane did made a deed to Fergus Snoddy, and at the time of conveyance was not married. A Jonesboro paper in February 1893, carried a full account of the trial - headlined: Lizzie Lane Loses; Heirs Lost Suit in Snoddy Case.
