It was officered as follows: Captain, Pryor Buchanan; first lieutenant, A. S. Fulton; second lieutenant, John V. Moyers; third lieutenant, C. A. McDaniel; orderly sergeant, William T. Slater. http://www.dmwv.org/mexwar/history/texmex.htm - Mexican War Information
During the summer of 1846 the war entered a brief lull while thousands of volunteers, authorized by Congress for twelve-months service, arrived in the lower Rio Grande Valley. At the same time, volunteers initially mustered in for three and six months had to be let go. Taylor, frustrated with the Quartermaster's Department at New Orleans, was unable to move further into Mexico for lack of transportation and supplies. As a result, he and the thousands under his command had to sit and wait until the end of July before they could begin moving upriver to the next staging point, a little Mexican town called Camargo.
By September, although it was necessary to leave a number of troops behind in Camargo, Taylor managed to march a large force to Monterey and lay siege to that city. The fighting was fierce. In the end, it came down to hand-to-hand combat in the city streets. But again, the American army was victorious after the Mexican forces agreed to a capitulation, the terms of which were criticized in the U.S.
During August and September 1846, a second force, made up largely of volunteers, was assembled at San Antonio de Bexar, Texas, under command of General John E. Wool. By the beginning of October, they were on the march into Mexico, to link up with Taylor in Chihuahua.

"Disease killed more men than bullets. This was due mainly to unsanitary camp conditions, the result of the ignorance of men who had no idea how disease was spread. At the U.S. army encampment at Camargo, in northern Mexico, conditions were especially bad. Camped in a dry, dusty valley along the banks of the San Juan River - the same source of water the men used for drinking, cooking, and bathing, illness ran rampant with dysentery, measles and other assorted ailments taking hundreds of young men to early graves in the chaparral, buried in shallow graves, shrouded in their blankets."

1 Uniform Coat 4 Pairs Bootees
1 Woolen Jacket 4 Pairs socks

Dear Cousins
It is fearful to acknowledge that I am unable to be on the battlefield today, but having been wounded by a shell, I think sufficient apologies ____. Our brigade suffered considerable and our regiment perhaps more than any others, we taken 530 men in the fight and have only 120 for duty, from this you may conclude that our killed and wounded was numerous, especially our wounded and skedadless, but I was proud there was but few others could not only admitting the fact that it was serious enough = early Wednesday morning _____ Hardee's division engaged them in the left and after driving them almost out of hearing, it became necessary for the _________ to try their hand. So Withers Division composing the first line, they of course stepped in with Cheatham to support them. Chalmers brag Mississippi brigade said that Tennessians should have nothing to do with the fight, that they were going to whip them ___________ they made the attack but did not fight more than 15 minutes before they run, in fact, the 21st regiment everyone skidadled or mostly so. It seemed they charged the enemy but did not move them from their first position. Our brigade taken their place and suffered considerable, but we made them get farther, I was just in the act of shooting when a shell tumbled ____ my ________________ of course I did not go any farther ___ we then chased on the Yanks and their batteries. We drove them some two miles taking several batteries and the victory was ours, but the thing is not decided yet. I hope that we will satisfy = the boy's wounds are mostly slight but few _______. I have a great deal to tell you but as we have to move in a few minutes, I will have to close, give my love to all and write soon. I think I will be able to go to the battlefield before long, although my wound is very sore, my hip is hurt considerable, but I can walk about some.
Truly yours
Cousin David S. George

Here are a couple statements by Walter Gardner SNODDY that were sent to Mrs. Margrethe D. WATSON and in turn were sent to me in the early sixties. (Marvin D. Snoddy)
1. John A. Snoddy was not in the Civil War, he was drafted to make shoes for the Army, and that is the way he spent his time.
2. Spent his entire life in Lincoln County, except for two trips, one was to Texas, and one to Mexico. The trip to Mexico was for the purpose of seeing after his brother's (William) estate. William died in Mexico. I have heard my father tell of his return to the United States with two thousand dollars (in gold) in a belt about his waist.

"Carol,
Are you aware of the lawsuit where Thomas White sued John Snody over two hogs in November 1870, in Lincoln County, Tennessee?
I am not quite sure what happened, but I think Thomas borrowed some money from John, and when the loan was not paid in a timely fashion, John took the hogs.
In order to cover the court costs, Thomas mortgaged the land left him and his wife by his mother-in- law, Lucinda White, yes, Thomas White married Matilda White. When Thomas was unable to repay the mortgage, the land was lost. Lucinda was one of the early settlers of Lincoln County. She and her husband, who was killed in 1814, cleared the land and Lucinda raised her children there, by herself, and lived on the land until her death in 1859.
Lucinda was my gggg-grandmother, and I have always felt sad that her land was lost in a fight over two hogs."

It is said that the family moved there from Scotland to get away from the Kings Church. Don't know what year. I don't have a record of when they moved to North Carolina, but William Snoddy was born 20 April 1749 in Rowan Co., North Carolina. William was the son of Samuel and Elizabeth (Sloan) Snoddy. William's son David was born in Tennessee in 1786. I think Samuel moved there with his family a short time after William was born. My brother could tell you more about that. He may have record of William's brothers and sisters if there were any. My great grandfather David Andrew Snoddy left the farm in Tennessee and became a Mail Carrier in Cherokee Co., Oklahoma where he died in 1898, when my grandfather was 6 months old. My grandfather Eldred Snoddy moved to California in 1920."

Below is a letter from Jesse to Pleasant Snoddy, dated Dec 20, 1858.
December 20th, 1858 - Tennessee, Lincoln County
Dear Brothers and Sister -
I sit myself this morning to write you a few lines to let you know how we are getting along. We are all tolerably well at present. I was over at your Ma's this week, they were all about them. I suppose you have heard of the death of your Father. He died the 18th of November. He had been lingering ever since you left. It was the Lord's will to take him away. He is done with his trials and crosses of this world. He has gone to reap the reward that our kind and all-wise Father has promised for them that serve him. We all must go sooner as later, and if we can be prepared for death, all will be well with us. We feel satisfied that he is gone to rest; he said that the Lord put him here and would take him away and take care of him. Brothers, live humble and try to meet him again when parting is no more, your father made a will, he wanted you ___________ to stay there on the place as ___________ and Price to stay with her and the negroes to be hired out. We have gotten several letters from you. Pleas [Pleasant] wrote that he was going to California. I do not like to advise anybody, but I do not want you to go and not only me, but all the rest of yours is not satisfied, we want you to come back. Your Pa's land will have to be rented out and I think you would make as much here is as anywhere. Every-thing that we make here is a good price. Pork $___ and 5 ½ everything is high and people say that there is more money in this county now than there has ever has been. Pleas [Pleasant], your Ma, I think wants you to come back very bad and I think you ought to come, she is so lonesome. I am settled for a while. I have bought land, we all tried to sell ours together, but we could not. And the girls and Milton is gone to Texas. I must soon come to a close. I never wrote what was the matter with your Father. It was his liver, enlargement of the liver. So the doctors say he suffered a great deal. I want you to write as soon as this comes to hand. I hope these few lines will find you in good health. Blessings of our heavenly, nothing more at the present.Respectfully,
Jesse W. Parks

Delia F. Snoddy, widow of Pleasant Snoddy: In 1915, Delia resided near Kelso, TN (P.O. Box, Kelso, Rt 1). She had lived in the state all her life (born: Oct. of 1848 in Lincoln Co, TN. Her first husband was John Ashworth. They had three children: (1) John Edward Ashworth born May 12, 1869, (2) Talitah Elizabeth Ashworth born April 26, 1870, and (3) Clark Ashworth, born January 07, 1872. Her second husband, Pleasant, was also born in Lincoln Co. They were married on Oct. 2, 1879 by Esquire Isaac Hancock. Pleasant enlisted in Company H, Turney's First Tennessee Infantry in April of 1861. He served four years and after his company surrended at Appomatox, VA on April 9, 1865, he was paroled from prison in March 1865. Pleasant died on June 10, 1900 in Lincoln Co, TN. They had six children, but only three survived -- two sons and a daughter. In 1915 Delia listed their ages as 31 (Henry), 28 (Jennie), and 24 (Almer). Pleasant and Delia had a 47-acre farm (worth around $1,000), 1 horse, and cattle (worth about $150), which according to Delia, did not provide a "fair" living. After Pleasant's death, Delia continued to live on the farm with her youngest son, who she stated "has been unable to work for the past five years."

Notes for DAVID ALMER SNODDY:
Obit: Fayetteville Observer, Fayetteville, TN, April 22, 1926 - Last Thursday morning near Kelso, David Elmer Snoddy, aged 37 years, committed suicide. He and his mother, who has been bed-ridden for four years, lived together. As was his custom, he arose about 4:30 a.m. to feed his stock and went a half-mile out to Smithland Road taking along his double-barrel shotgun. He removed the shoe from his right foot, tied a fish line to the big toe and to the trigger of the gun; he then placed the muzzle in his mouth and fired the gun. It was loaded with No. 5 shot and a hole was blown in the right temple. He was found about 6:30. He was in the service during the world war for 11 months and went over the ocean. He has never received compensation from the government and his mother certainly needs it at this time. Funeral services were conducted at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church at Kelso by Rev. D. B. Smith, burial at the Snoddy graveyard.

George in 1839 and they had a son, David S. George ca 1840-41. David A. George remarried ca 1848 and Price's father had also remarried; this suggests he didn't choose to live with his father and his new wife. (???)

RUSK STATE HOSPITAL. Rusk State Hospital for the mentally ill was opened in 1919 by the conversion of the Rusk Penitentiary building into a hospital for the care of the "Negro insane." During the first year of operation, some of the old penitentiary buildings were renovated, reconstructed, and converted into wards and hospital buildings, and 600 patients were admitted. Early in its history the institution included a general hospital for the care of the acutely sick, an infirmary for aged and decrepit cases, a tubercular hospital for the care of white men and women, and a tubercular hospital for black men and women. A chapel and recreational hall were later added. The institution operated its own garden, farms, hog ranch, and poultry farm, which supplied much of its needs. With a capacity of 2,426, the Rusk Hospital had an enrollment in 1946 of 2,308 patients. The average daily census of patients at Rusk State Hospital in 1964 was 1,942; by 1967, 1,886 patients were housed there, and a maximum-security unit for the criminally insane was a part of the facility. In 1970 Rusk State Hospital received accreditation by the Joint Commission on Hospital Accreditation and approval to receive Medicare and Medicaid benefits from the United States Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. More and better-trained professional workers were added, and a student practicum program was instituted with Stephen F. Austin State University and North Texas State University. In 1970 the hospital served thirty counties in the East Texas-Gulf Coast area through eight units. The average daily census for 1970 was 1,796. Since 1972-73, when the hospital had a population of 1,950 patients, different methods of treating the mentally ill, which emphasize outpatient programs and deinstitutionalization, have resulted in reduced populations. In 1982-83 the hospital had 952 patients; in 1992, only 442. See also TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF MENTAL HEALTH AND MENTAL RETARDATION.

Notes for TEMPLE VANBUREN RENEGAR:
Article from Memphis Newspaper provided by Sandie Simmons and Marvin D. Snoddy.
"Of course, they didn’t know the pistol was loaded, but that doesn’t affect the fact that T. V. Renegar, 43, 165 Elm St., is fighting for his life at city hospital, while his family, almost destitute, sobbingly awaits news of his condition, or that E. L. Riggsby, 1028 Barton Ave., will have the memory of the accident to carry with him through life.
It happened at 7:30 this morning, at the residence of J. O. Norris, 174 Gailse Ave., while Renegar and Riggsby were sitting around the fire tampering with the latter’s powerful .30 Luger automatic pistol. Riggsby pointed it at Renegar and snapped it, just as Renegar opened his mouth to remonstrate with him, and the bullet ploughed its way through his throat and came out the back of his neck. Renegar fell to the floor and looked sorrowfully at his best friend. He cannot talk.
Renegar and Riggsby met at Norris’ house early this morning for a hunt across the river. They were cleaning the guns to have them in readiness, when the accident occurred. Riggsby is night watchman for the Darnell Lumber Co., and, therefore, carries a high-powered pistol.
"I never want to see another pistol," he declared -- after it was too late. The wounded man was carried out on the porch, to await the arrival of the city ambulance, and there his wife and three daughters gathered around him, while the red blood flowed from the ugly wound. Riggsby paced up and down in the background, muttering over and over. "I have shot my best friend! What did I mean by snapping that gun? What did I mean?"
The victim was placed in the ambulance, while Riggsby was taken to police headquarters. Riggsby was released on his own recognizance, after he had explained the circumstances to Captain Couch.
"We had all been snapping the pistol," he said, "And I must have loaded it unthinkingly; that is the only way I can account for it."
Renegar was formerly a track foreman for the Frisco, but was laid off some weeks ago. He has been unsuccessfully hunting for a position for some time."

"Here are a couple statements by Walter Gardner SNODDY that were sent to me by Mrs. Margrethe D. WATSON and in turn were sent to me in the early sixties.
1. My father was not in the Civil War, he was drafted to make shoes for the Army, and that is the way he spent his time.
2. My father spent his entire life in Lincoln County, except for two trips, one was to Texas, and one to Mexico. The trip to Mexico was for the purpose of seeing after his brother's (William) estate. William died in Mexico. I have heard my father tell of his return to the United States with two thousand dollars (in gold) in a belt about his waist."

Robert Snoddy claimed land in the September 16, 1893 Cherokee Strip Run in the Oklahoma Territory.
Detailed information on Robert Montgomery Snoddy was provided by Frank Snoddy, Lavita, TX.
Obit: December 1940 - Robert Montgomery Snoddy was born in Lincoln County, TN, March 31, 1866, and spent his boyhood there. He came to Texas in 1894 and in 1895 was married to Miss Nannie Cyer, and to this union six children were born. Their first child, the only daughter, died at the age of ten months. The first nine years of their married life was spent in what is now Oklahoma and from there they moved to Texas, where they bought the farm near Levita in Coryell County, where he was residing at the time of this death, which came December 14, 1940 at 6:00 p.m. He was baptized into the Church of Christ in 1905, and remained a faithful member as long as his health would permit. Mr. Snoddy was a man with a pioneer spirit, having worked hard, enduring hardships, denying himself, ever looking into the future at what he might accomplish and working to that end. He was a great lover of home, unassuming, never meddling into other people's affairs, and was a good citizen in every respect. Mr. Snoddy was known as a man of honesty, which he taught to his boys from their youth up and his great desire in life was for them to be noble, fine men, and to have comfortable homes. Those surviving to miss the companionship and influence of such a life are his good wife and five sons; John A. Snoddy of Levita, Robert O. Snoddy of San Antonio, Buford A. Snoddy of Levita, Houston A. Snoddy of Gatesville, and Cledia A. Snoddy of San Antonio; also thirteen grandchildren." Memories of Carrie Olive Renegar Darrow
Great-granddaughter of David Snoddy (grandson of Samuel Snoddy)
These are the recollections of Carrie Renegar Darrow. They were written for, and told to, her 4 sons in 1979, at the age of 80. There are a few differences in names and places; i.e., "came from Holland", was probably called Deutchland by her grandfather, other corrections have been made.
"My grandparents on my mother’s side were named, Snoddy. They had 14 children and all lived to be grown. They lived on a farm in middle Tennessee, not far from Kelso. We lived a few miles from them when I lived in Tennessee. My grandfather Snoddy was named John. He died in 1905. My grandmother Snoddy was named Eliza. My grandmother died after we came to Oklahoma.
My grandfather Renegar was Dutch. He came from Holland when he was a small boy. His name was Wilbur. He and my grandmother had 5 children, 4 girls and 1 boy. The girls were Christina Walker, Mary Route, Loretta Martin, and Fannie. The boy became my Daddy. His name was James Franklin Davidson Renegar. He and Elsie Snoddy married and had 4 children. 3 boys and 1 girl.
We lived in Tennessee near a little town called Kelso, which was not many miles from Fayetteville. Three of us children were born there and one was born in Cordell, Oklahoma about 1908 (LaVoy). He died when he was two or three weeks old.
We lived in Tennessee where 4 main traveled roads crossed and the community was called Crossroads. There was a school house and church. Also, my parents had the post office in their house. He was postmaster there for a few years. There was a big woods east of our house which extended for several miles. For recreation the people in that community had fish fries, taffy pulls, and played games. They also had log rollings. The community would get together, the men would cut trees and make logs out of them, and the women would all get together and fix big dinners for them. They would take these logs to a river and float them to a saw mill to make lumber out of them.
My grandfather and grandmother Renegar lived with us until we came to Oklahoma. He just had one eye, so they didn’t take him into the Army. He stayed home and made shoes for the soldiers.
The James F. Renegar’s came to Oklahoma in November 1905. We farmed in 1906, 2 miles west of Cordell. My daddy quit farming and we moved to Cordell. He worked in a lumber yard.
When my mother was growing up, they didn’t have wash boards. They would take their wash to a spring which was on the farm. It was quite aways down a hill from their house and they would beat the clothes with a board until they got clean. They used lye soap, which they made at home. My grandmother Snoddy spun the thread out of cotton which they raised, also wool they sheared from their sheep. After they got the thread spun, they wove material out of the thread and made them all their clothes out of it. They gathered some kind of berries out in the woods and dyed some of the material blue. They made the men’s suits and their Sunday clothes out of the blue material. They made the sheets and underwear out of the white material. They made blankets and the men’s Sunday suits out of the wool material.
The people grew sugar cane and made molasses and stored it in barrels to use all year. They grew a lot of apples in Tennessee. They would store them in a cellar and they would have apples all winter. People dried a lot of fruit in those days.
We left an old spinning wheel at our house in Tennessee when we came to Oklahoma. She never did use it after she and my Daddy married. My Mother was born September 8, 1870. My Daddy, James Franklin Renegar, was born September 10, 1862. He was 8 years older than my Mother. They were married September 8, 1890. My Daddy had 4 sisters, Loretta, Kristeen, Mary, and Fannie.
My Daddy was the only boy, and the youngest of 5 children. His Daddy’s name was Wilber Renegar. He was Dutch. He came from overseas when he was a small boy. They settled in middle Tennessee near the small town of Kelso. Which isn’t far from Fayetteville, Tennessee.
James Franklin married Ida Elsie Snoddy. She was 20 and he was 28. They moved to a farm near Kelso, Tennessee where 2 boys and a girl were born to them. Owen F., Carrie Olive, and Loris Afton. In 1905, we moved to Oklahoma. We lived on a farm one mile west of Cordell, for one year, then we moved into town. My Daddy worked at a lumber yard and my oldest brother, Owen worked at a printing office for a while then he started to school at the Cordell Academy, where he graduated. Then, he began to study law, and passed the bar exam. He taught school a few years, then he ran of county judge. He was defeated the first time, then he tried again 2 years later and got to be county judge of Washita County.
I was nearly 7 years younger than him. I, Carrie Renegar Darrow, finished high school at the Cordell High School in 1919. Then I got a teaching job at the Canute Consolidated School and taught the 4th and 5th grades for three years. My brother, Loris, was born May 1, 1905. He finished high school in Cordell. He taught school a few years, then in 1924 or 1925, he moved to Oklahoma City and got a string of service stations.
After James F. Renegar and Elsie Ida moved to Cordell, there was a little boy born to them. He died when he was only a few weeks old. His name was LaVoy.
When I was 4 or 5 years, and lived in Tennessee, my parents kept the post office for a few years. One day I was looking into things and I found a doll in one of the post office boxes. It was for Santa Claus to bring me for Christmas. That Christmas, a number of the community women went to the church building and trimmed the tree with popcorn and paper chains. I remember going with my Mother. She was going to help. That was the Christmas I got the doll.
We lived close to a forest when we lived in Tennessee. I had a swing in our yard. We had sheep, cow, hogs, and horses. My Mother would pick the ducks to make feather beds and pillows, and shear the sheep for wool to sell.
When I was a baby, I had [diarrigh]. All the babies that had it but me died. We left Tennessee in 1905 and never did go back until after Floyd and I married and had 2 children. In 1925, Floyd and I and Charles, 3 years, and Wayne, 9 months, also my brother Owen and family, 3 children, my brother Loris and 2 children, and my Mother and Daddy went back to our old home, and was gone 3 weeks. It took us a week to go, and a week to come back. Floyd and I, Charles and Iva Pearl went again. We went to a small Church of Christ that served as a school when we lived there. It was near our farm where we lived before we came to Oklahoma."

Marv's Comments: I think this is the same person that had the original North Carolina land grant, granting 640 acres in Davidson County to William Snoddy, in his possession. (At that time Davidson County was in North Carolina but is now in Tennessee.) It was rolled up and protected in a piece of cane with a wooden plug in the end. My Dad borrowed it about 1970 or 1971 and I made a copy of it.

Its gotta be so exiting traveling to our ancestors old farm lands, and meeting with family that still live there.....i wish i could get to know more people i dont know, that maybe you do. Perhaps you could tell me about them? Thank you for the information you have provided me for my report, its due tomarow, (monday) or the first draft of it at least. The webpage I went to was geneology.com and looked up Snoddy Family History, and it took me to one of the pages created by you. I found my aunt Faye's e-mail address....and some info that really interested me. I'm having to write 2 reports at the moment, one over family history, and one over my future career. I plan to get into Veterinary medicine and either become a basic Veterinarian, or a specialist. Well, perhaps we could talk more, this really interests me....all this family history and stuff, maybe I'll become more then just a Veterinarian :) well, till later cousin. *family love* Devin, Spicewood, TX"
