W. M. SNODDY

DEALER IN DRY GOODS, GROCERIES
AND GENERAL MERCHANDISE

Rogersville, Ala., October 3, 1910

Mr. John Snoddy:

Dear sir, I intended writing you as soon as got home from Nashville but was sick for several days and had my arrangements made to move so I have neglected it until now. My family and self are getting a long very well at present - I did not get to see Mr. W. E. Parham in Nashville as I expected to do so did not learn any more of the family after I left your mothers. I had a letter from Mr. Parham stating that he was in bad health and could not get to Nashville as I expected him to do so. I did not learn any more of the family record after I left your mothers and I have written to Mr. W. E. Parham and gave him your address and told him that I thought you would aswer his letter if he would write you. He seams to be very ancious to learn what relation we are to him, so I will give this in to you as I understand it.

My father was Thomas A. Snoddy a son of William Snoddy and William S. and David Snoddy and Graham Snoddy was brothers and I think had a brother named Thomas, but doant know where he settled at, so if your father was a son of David Snoddy, he and my father was first cousins so if you know who your great grandfather was or who your great grandmother was, kindly tell Mr. Parham all you know about it.

I think or was told by my mother that the first of the Snoddys that my father knew of was John Snoddy an emigrant from Ireland and married a Scotch girl and that we were of that decent of people so if this is write we are the people he is trying to find and if not he wants to no it for some reason, I can't tell just what, so if you can tell him wheather I am write or not I would be glad that you would do so tell him all about the old land warrant that your ant Dealia has of William Snoddy's whare he entered a piece of land in south carlina or north carlina which ever it was he think that will help him in locating each generation and of which family each belongs I never did write to your ant Betsy Faning so if she is living and you have hird from her kindly write and tell me how she is getting along.

We have began to pick cotton here though it is very short but corn is fin, cotton is selling at 13.5 cts per # and cotton seed at 40 c per bushel at the gin. I am sending 4 of my children to school where we hav a very good school with 3 teachers and our little town has 7 dry god stores 2 groserse stores one drug store and one bank and 3 nice churches on saw mill and one cotton gin, 2 black smith shops, so I will close by asking you to give my best wishes and love to all the family and asking you to writ to me.

Your cousin,

W. M. Snoddy

Exerpt from Alta Snoddy Barnett's article from "The Heritage of Lauderdale County, Alabama", page 444. She has his name listed as Archie John Snoddy.

"Archie John and Ethel farmed south of Mt. Bethel Church in Lauderdale County on County Road 53 (Old Red Lane). He also had a general merchandise store at Toonersville. Their marriage was short lived, with his death in a freak accident at a cotton gin east of Toonersville. Ethel was grief stricken, but soon adjusted and began working to support her children. She worked on the farm, took in quilting, sewing, and did washing and ironing at night. Archie's sister, Julia A. Snoddy, was living with them when he died and continued to live with Ethel and the children until they were grown. After a few years, Ethel bought a farm near Anderson where she and the children continued to farm. She met and married Meredith Gentry "Bud" Moore. He is buried in the Romine Cemetery by his first wife, Lucy A. Romine."

Two Men Meet Sudden Death in East Lauderdale Boiler Explosion Kills Archie Snoddy and Ed Weather and Destroys Gin - from The Florence Times of Florence, Alabama dated Friday, November 22, 1907. (Provided by Marvin D. Snoddy).

On Friday afternoon last a disastrous accident occurred at the gin of Patrick WHITE, between Whitehead and Rogersville, which resulted in the death of two men, Archie SNODDY, engineer, and Ed WEATHERS, fireman. The boiler was torn into fragments, and its pieces almost disappeared from the fateful scene, A large cut stone, evidently a part of the foundation, cut Mr. SNODDY's body in two and his death was instantaneous. Mr. WEATHERS, who was badly injured on the head, lived until three o'clock Saturday morning, when death came to his release. Mr. WHITE was in the second story of the gin house, and besides a severe shock, was otherwise uninjured. Several other persons were standing around the house, and their escape was almost a miracle. The plant was made a complete wreck, and presented a scene of desolation. The two men killed were well and favorably known, and their sudden death cast a gloom over that entire community. My SNODDY was about 35 years of age and leaves a wife and several children. Mr. WEATHERS was about 18 or 20, and was unmarried.
